Top Ten Tuesday: Book I Feel Differently About After Time Has Passed

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.

Time flies and as the years go by, we grow older and the things we once loved or liked don’t seem that phenomenal anymore. You start seeing the flaws in books or maybe you just simply outgrow them. Here are the 10 books I feel differently about after time has passed.

1. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey: Alien’s are a hit or miss for me and when I first read the book I was impressed. However, once I finished it my enthusiasm waned and I didn’t care much for picking up the next book. It didn’t help that a love triangle was introduced. An enjoyable book but hardly sensational.

2. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer: I can see this being on a few lists. I read this series when I was 13 and even then I was bored with some parts of the series *coughs* New Moon *coughs.* Over time I have definitely seen how problematic this series is, especially with regards to Bella and Edward. On top of that I think the whole sparkling vampire thing is one of the main reasons I no longer read vampire based stories.

3. Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick: I simply outgrew this series. It was enjoyable when I first read it but since then I have read more Angel series that have a lot more depth, an even more intriguing plot and stronger character development.

4. I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak: I love this book and still do. However, after I finished this book I had a nagging feeling about the ending. In general people have either loved or hated the ending and after finishing the book I found myself getting more and more irritated with it. I still love the book and the message of the story but the ending knocked off a star for me.

5. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins: The first time I read this book I was all about the romance. However, I found that I actually enjoyed Anna and Etienne a lot more as a couple in the companion novels than in this book. The whole push and pull thing between them was frustrating as hell and Etienne definitely needed to make a concrete decision regarding a third party earlier in the book.

6. Divergent by Veronica Roth: This was one of the first series I read when I was just getting back into reading and since I had nothing to really compare it to I was blown away by it. However, looking back I realised that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought it did and Tris actually got on my nerves a lot of the time, especially in Insurgent. On top of all this I’ve grown very distant from the dystopian genre and I just feel like it’s lost it’s appeal.

7. Moonglass by Jessi Kirby: A really cute, summer read but definitely forgettable. I really enjoyed this book when I read it but afterwards I felt cold. I never really connected to the characters and over the years this book has basically slipped my mind. It’s kind of like a filler book to read when you get tired of the intensity of fantasy novels.

8. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare: I like this series but I don’t love it. After finishing the first book in the series I was hooked but the further I got into the series, the appeal waned. I just felt like certain plot points were dragged out for far too long and some of the characters never really took hold for me.

9. A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall: Looking back I keep wondering why I ever picked up this book. At first I thought it was charming and different but it’s also absolutely ridiculous and some of the narrative perspectives were just too random. I loved the concept but sadly it just doesn’t deliver.

10. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart: I think the reason I gave this book such a high rating at first was because of the shock value. Once I’d gotten over that I didn’t really feel like this book was something special. It’s been a few years since I read the book and I can’t even remember the names of the characters.

Those are the books I feel differently about over time.

    1. I think a lot of people do haha. I mean I appreciate the platform it created for Young Adult books but it’s definitely too problematic for my liking now.

  1. Great list 🙂
I am with you on the Mortal Instruments series! I mean i haven’t finished it yet, but i am not in love with is as everyone else seem to be so i understand what you mean with the interest going away the father you read 🙂

    1. Yeah. I mean I can definitely see the appeal of the series but personally it’s not a stunner haha. I think the multitude of characters introduced and the overlap between her other series also put a damper on the series for me. Too much was stuffed in to make me not care about them.

  2. Twilight definitely made a few lists, including mine! I’ve grown out of quite a few series that I used to love, like you did with Hush, Hush. I’ve also seen Anna and the French Kiss on a couple lists today. To be honest, that was probably my least favorite of her 3 novels. I personally loved Isla! Great list!

    My TTT!

    1. I think that happens to everyone. Over time we all outgrow books we once loved but can appreciate the value they had before. Isla was also my favourite of the three, mainly because I could relate to Isla as a character more than the others. 😀

  3. I really didn’t like We Were Liars because I saw it coming. I was so shocked that a lot of people didn’t guessed it, but I think those are the ones that really love that book.
Here’s my post if you want to check it out. I didn’t include Twilight, but you’re right, it’s been on a lot of lists I’ve read and something similar happened to me. The first book I actually enjoyed back then, but now I see how terrible the relationship is and I don’t like the writing either. The world building was also lacking SO much.

    1. Looking back the plot twist was so obvious that I was surprised that I didn’t make the connection sooner but I definitely agree that the twist was the make or break moment for the novel.
Oh yes, the world building in Twilight was just awful. I always focus on the characters but I barely remember anything about the world itself, except for the fact that vampires sparkled haha.

  4. I was the same way about Divergent – the first book was great, but everything just went downhill from there. 😦 And I was a bit meh about The Fifth Wave as well. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous choices! ❤

    1. I definitely agree. Divergent wasn’t all that bad but the rest of the series let it down and when I think about the other dystopian books I’ve read it really doesn’t stand out. 😀

  5. Great picks, Lois! I read The 5th Wave too and liked it, but didn’t love it enough to continue with the series because there were SO MANY alien books that time. Did you catch the movie?

And I’m sad about A Little Something Different. I haven’t read that one yet but I’ve read Signs Point to Yes, and it was easily one of the shallowest books I’ve ever read, with very weak characters and very weak plot. :/

    1. I’ve not seen the movie. Is it any good? I don’t have the best relationship with alien stories. I don’t know why but I just can’t seem to get sucked into those stories.

I would give A Little Something Different a miss because the characters in that book are also very weak and lack any depth. Also the narrative choices were so random and ridiculous and didn’t really contribute to the story itself.

      1. I haven’t seen it either, and judging from the score on Rotten Tomatoes, I don’t think it’s that good, haha. I actually LOVE alien invasion movies but I’m not sure this one would be it.

Same problem as with Signs Point to Yes! Just overall a very weak book with very messy narration. :/

  6. I’ve only read three of the books on this list. I loved the Divergent series so much even if Allegiant did destroy me, haha. I really don’t want to reread the books because I don’t want them ruined for me, haha. I also LOVED We Were Liars, but definitely see it wasn’t for everyone. It’s also interesting to see that you haven’t really thought about because I read it a few years ago too and I still think about it all the time. I’ve only read one book in the TMI series and I really don’t know if I want to continue it.

    1. Divergent wasn’t the worst series but I also didn’t think it was the best. I had a lot of issues with Allegiant but I think I’m one of a few people that wasn’t as angry with Tris’ fate because in the long run it makes total ssense.
I feel like We Were Liars will either be a hit or miss for most people which makes it interesting cause I love seeing the differences in opinions.
I continued with the TMI series but again I didn’t really think they were anything special. I say go with your mood when you decide haha.

      1. Oh yeah, definitely. I think we all got swept away in the dystopian hype haha. It’s interesting how trends happen with books and how they change over time. Yes, at Tris. I was devastated, but I understood why.

Yeah! People either seem to love or hate it. Yes, same!!

Haha, yeah that’s what I’ll do!

    1. That’s happened with me to quite a few series that are sitting on my to read list. My excitement levels just dwindle over time. Who knows you could always find yourself drawn to them again one day. 😀

    1. Quite a few people have said that about the series. If I hadn’t already read them I don’t think I’d have picked them up at this point in my life. 😀
