Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.
This weeks topic is a Halloween freebie. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, autumn is my favourite time of year and Halloween is part of the reason why. It’s just such a festive event and a time to embrace all things spooky. I’ve split this weeks list into two parts; the first, a list of books I’ve read that are very atmospheric and fitting for this time of year. The second, a list of 5 of the creepiest book covers I’ve ever seen.
Part 1: Atmospheric books I’ve read for Halloween
1. The Archived by Victoria Schwab: Victoria is a master at creating an atmosphere. The Archived in particular got pretty spooky at time; with the dead ‘histories’ on the run, the chase to find them, and the mystery behind the creepy past of Mackenzie’s new home. It’s a chilling, haunting book that embodies all things mysterious.
2. Angelfall by Susan Ee: Warrior angels, creepy experimentation and very gruesome imagery. Susan Ee doesn’t hold back on the darkness in this series. There were some moments in the book where I just could not comprehend the horrific images we were treated with in the book.
3. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin: I made the mistake of reading this book at 1am when I was home alone. To say I was on edge would be an understatement. There’s a lot of mystery in this series and with Mara being a somewhat unreliable narrator you’re never really sure what to believe.
4. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater: This isn’t as creepy but it is very much atmospheric. It’s has supernatural elements, mystery and a lot of Welsh mythology. This is without a doubt the perfect autumn read.
5. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey: Lets talk aliens. This is a book where you literally have no idea who to trust and it’s so easy to mistake a friend for foe.
Part 2: Creepy Book Covers
1. Of Breakable Things by A. Lynden Rolland: I don’t like the way this person or corpse is looking at me. Those eyes are too ice like to be friendly.
2. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs: I don’t know about you, but one of the creepiest things ever is an image of a haunting, ghost child. This book is so appropriate for Halloween.
3. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness: With the image of the monster creeping towards your home in the middle of the night, this cover just make me think of the classic horror films.
4. Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake: Why the blood? What has this girl done that has her covered in blood. Did she kill someone, did she crawl out of a TV so she could slaughter her next victim. This cover reminds me of The Ring, a film that by now has well and truly become a classic.
5. The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff: “Down will come baby cradle and all” Any other time of the year ‘Rock-a-bye Baby’ is a harmless lullaby. However, when Halloween approaches any lullaby can be made to sound creepy. Pair this with an abandoned pram in the middle of the woods surrounded by fog and you’ve got yourself a spooky story. The knives and sharp objects just further heightens the horror.
Those are my Halloween must read picks? Tell me what are your Halloween recommendations?
I’m finishing The Fifth Wave now. Definiiiitely creeeepy.

If one can judge purely on the covers of these, they seem creepy indeed. Happy reading! https://ireadboooks.wordpress.com/2015/10/27/my-top-5-halloween-reading-recommendations/

It seems that the creepiest covers must be in black and white and have a hint of red. I’m not sure I’d recommend reading the books in the middle of the night haha. Thanks for visiting. 😀

The 5th Wave is great. The sequel has a twist I didn’t expect. Doctor Sleep by Stephen King, or Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey a good Halloween reads.

I must confess, I have not read the sequel yet. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Doctor Sleep and it definitely sounds like a perfect Halloween read. Thanks for visiting. 😀

I absolutely agree with you, lullabies during Halloween is a big no no, it makes me the exact opposite of comforted or relaxed.

Glad I’m not the only one that thinks so. There’s just something so eerie about lullabies this time of year.

I haven’t read any of the books you’ve listed in your post this week. Quite a few of them sound really good, so I’ll have to add them to me ever growing reading wishlist.

I’ve been wanting to read The Archived for a really long time now, but I’m scared that I won’t be able to get through it! I’m so bad with anything spooky! I absolutely love Miss Peregrine’s and A Monster Calls though ❤

The Archived isn’t the spookiest book I’ve ever read. I’d say it’s more of a mystery. It’s worth a shot. I’m ashamed of how long Miss Peregrine’s and A Monster Calls have been on my to be read list. Hopefully in the next year or so I’ll finally have the chance to read them. 🙂

Okay that’s good to know! I’ll definitely give The Archived a go then (after Vicious!)

I have heard such fantastic things about Brenna Yovanoff’s book, and that cover is downright creepy, I will have to get it on Kindle! Miss Peregrine’s is becoming a movie with my beloved Eva Green, so I am also keen to check it out!!

Judging by the cover The Replacement is definitely a fitting Halloween book. I’m going to try and read the first Miss Peregrine’s book before the film comes out. I’m quite excited about the cast of the film so I definitely have high hopes. 😀

I’m sad to say that I am in the same boat. I feel like I should have prioritized my spooky books but I’ve just not been in the mood. Maybe I can make up for it by watching a horror film haha

I love cover posts! I agree with you about the first 5- they are VERY atmospheric while still appealing. The second five are.. not 😉 That cover of The Replacement is so creepy. And Miss Peregrine’s always gives me the willies! Such great choices!

Not going to lie cause I am terrible at judging books by their covers haha. The only time I really consider reading creepy books are over Halloween so the second 5 are going to have to wait until next year haha.
