Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth

Publication Date: 17th January 2017

Goodreads Summary
On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, in a galaxy where some are favored by fate, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not — their gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reclaim their gifts, their fates, and their lives, and reset the balance of power in this world?

Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power — something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.

Akos is from the peace-loving nation of Thuve, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Though protected by his unusual currentgift, once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive — no matter what the cost. When Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. They must decide to help each other to survive — or to destroy one another.

Based on the synopsis alone, Carve the Mark seems to have a darker atmosphere than the Divergent series did. A lot of information is given to us in the synopsis but the main theme I feel this book will highlight is the role of fate. I am so ready to meet Cyra and Akos and I’m also excited to see Roth venture into the world of Sci-fi.

What’s your most anticipated book?

    1. I think the fact that it’s a sci-fi and not a dystopian has me feeling a lot more excited about it cause I feel like the dytopian craze is slowly wearing off or just not as dynamic as it was.

  1. I’m still a little unsure about this one because I was unhappy with Allegiant, but also because this sounds like it’s very similar to the Divergent series. I hope it surprises me in a good way though.

    1. I definitely understand your reservations. Thinking back my feeling about the Divergent trilogy have changed quite a bit and it wasn’t as good as I once thought it was. I’m willing to give this one a chance and hopefully this one delivers.

    1. Oh Allegiant. In hindsight I actually thought the ending was fitting but overall the series isn’t as wonderful as I once thought it was. I’m glad she didn’t rush to put out a new book and I am so excited to see what Carve the Mark in store for us. It definitely sounds darker from the excerpt I read. I hope you end up enjoying this one. 😀
