Top Ten Tuesday: Abandoned Series

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the Broke and Bookish and hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.

There seems to be a growing love/hate relationship with book series these days and it’s a topic I will be covering in a discussion post I’m hoping to write. I love a good series. I love the idea of following a character from beginning to end and exploring a variety of different avenues along the way. However, series are also incredibly time consuming and I just don’t have the time or patience to commit to all the series. So, here’s a list of the book series I’ve decided to abandon.

1. A Song of Ice and Fire by Geroge R. R. Martin: I’ve already mentioned that I’ve tried and failed to read this series many times, but I just can’t make it past the halfway line. It’s just too dense and the constant POV switch is irritating. I’d much rather follow the condensed version of the TV show, but even that is lagging now. I’m ready to move on.

2. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas: Again, the concept of this series sounded interesting at first, but as time went on, my interest became non-existent, and I just don’t have any desire or motivation to read her books.

3. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken: The first time I heard of this series was when I was just getting back into reading. The concept sounded awesome at the time and I have no doubts that it’s a fun series to read. However, as time goes by, interests change and that’s exactly what happened here.

4. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs: Everyone keeps telling me how amazing this series is, but beyond my curiosity with regards to the hype, I’ve never been drawn to the series. Best to just leave it alone.

5. Lux by Jennifer L. Armentrout: If my teenage self-was here she would have been all over this series. My adult self, not so much. I’m not the biggest fan of the alien trope anyway.

6. The Witchlands by Susan Dennard: I’m actually on the fence about this series. I’ve read mixed reviews about it and while part of me is still curious about this world, it’s not an immediate priority. I think this is a case of just waiting to see where things go, especially since it’s a 5 book series.

Those are the books series I’ve abandoned.
Which book series have you decided to abandon?

  1. I totally agree with you about Game of Thrones, although I haven’t read the books before, I’ve never had any interest in reading them. Also the TV show has started to get a bit boring as well and to be honest I’m not quite sure if I’m going to watch the next season? There’s been so much hype for the Peculiar children books but I’ve never been interested in reading them either, mostly because the creepy type of books aren’t really my vibe.

    • I regret my spur of the moment purchase of the box set. I blame it on the stress of that time, they just take up space now haha. I’ll watch the next season just because it’s the final one but I am ready to close the door on the show. The last season was so predictable, the only thing that really interested me was the battle in the North.

    • Plus with ToG being such a long series I’ve just not got the time and patience to invest in it, especially since I have so many other series I still need to finish.

  2. OH I have a love/hate relationship with series as well, the wait, the commitment, sometimes I just, can’t do it haha. I feel the same way about Miss Peregrine, I actually read the first book, but wasn’t that compelled to continue on with the series either.
    Lovely list! 🙂

    • Yeah. I mean the concept of Miss Peregrine’s sounds interesting enough, but I just don’t find myself drawn to it at all and the last thing I want to do is force myself to read it haha.

    • I never really invested in the Miss Peregrine’s series. The only part that interested me was the pictures. The fact that the Game of Thrones series remains incomplete further solidifies my break up with it haha.

  3. Okay, here I am, being the one person to tell you that you are definitely NOT missing out on the Miss Peregrine’s series! I had a dreadful time getting through the trilogy and because I love Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs, I really wanted to love his books as much as hers too. But NO! I was not granted that bit of happiness. So, I was super pumped when the series was over, hoping that I might get more into whatever he was going to write next just to find out that HE IS WRITING A SPIN OFF SERIES IN THE SAME UNIVERSE!?!?!? I am just noping out of that one entirely.

    • Thank you for reaffirming this decision. I love Riggs and Mafi, but I can never get into either of their series. Which sucks. I’ve got this whole love/hate relationship with spin-off series. Sometimes less is more.

      • I adore Tahereh’s Shatter Me series, but I also know a lot of people who didn’t, so I understand. But the two as a couple are serious goals. And yes, yes!!! Less is definitely more in some cases.

  4. It took me a few months to read A Song of Ice and Fire. Then there’s that whole million years between books thing. Publisher’s Weekly tweeted that Winds of Winter was getting close to completion… my response was that that probably meant we could expect it to come out in the next decade or two.

    • YES!! The amount of time it’s taking to finish this series is ridiculous. I just don’t have the patience to start the series and then have to join the millions in waiting for a book that may never be finished at this point.
