Top Ten Tuesday: Book That Made Me Laugh/Cry

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.

Happy Tuesday everyone. I have been soaking up the sun these past few days so I’m sorry for being MIA. However, this week I am on a mission to catch up on the blogging, commenting and everything in between. 

This week’s topic is all about books that made me feel something. I always know I’ve found a good book when it provokes an emotional reaction from me, well that’s true for the most part anyway. I thought I’d divide this topic into two parts in which I will name 5 books that made me laugh and follow it up with 5 books that made me cry my little heart out. 

Made me Laugh

1. My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick: The dynamic between the Garretts had me grinning and chuckling away. George was a particular highlight for me and Patsy, the little baby of the family had her moment as well.

2. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan: Not only is this series an epic adventure but it’s also a lot of fun. Percy himself is full of sassy one liners that had me howling with laughter. 

3. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff: This is on the list mainly because of the banter between Ezra and Kady. The situation they find themselves in is definitely tense, so to see these two take playful little jabs at each other brought some relief. 

4. Boomerang by Noelle August: Sexy and hilarious. The opening scene itself had me in hysterics. The situations Ethan and Mia find themselves in because of their work were absolutely hilarious to read about.

5. Angelfall by Susan Ee: Again this comes down to the banter between Penryn and Raffe. They just have a great dynamic and some of the wise-cracks they laid out brought some lightheartedness to a dark book. Bonus, we get the twins who are just so fun and are always looking for some sort of trouble.

Made Me Cry

1. Red Rising by Pierce Brown: Pierce is the only author that has successfully made me cry within the first 50 pages of his book. This moment is the spark that leads Darrow down the path he takes. The tension and the build up to that moment was so emotional and haunting. I got chills and I was praying that there’d be some sort of loophole. I was holding back a sob when I realised that there was no escape. 

2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: World War II narrated by Death. I mean this book screams tearjerker material. This period in time was just full of tragedy and following the lives of the characters in this book broke my heart and had me welling up at so many different moments.

3. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta: How could I not put this one of my list? Our characters all have a story to tell and they are driven by emotion. Some of the revelation we got were so shocking I just couldn’t believe it. Jonah Griggs takes the crown of making me cry with his confession. 

4. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: I read this book a few years ago and I loved it. There was one moment that had me welling up in both the book and the film; the eulogies. Both Isaac and Hazel floored me with their words and it gave a sense of finality to Augustus’ fate.

5. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys: I literally finished this book no more than an hour ago. I was sat outside in the sun, holding back the tears that threatened to spill over. Again, this story takes place during World War II and looks at one of the most overlooked tragedies in history. My heart just broke for these characters, well most of them.
