Around the World in YA

It seems I have quite a long list of tags to get through and because my Wanderlust is all over the place right now I figured that this tag would be ideal. This tag was created by Becca @ Becca and Books and I was tagged by Joey @ Another After Thought and Daniela @ Daniela’s Book Shelf, thanks you guys, sorry it took so long. The aim of this tag is simple, all you do is choose a country and then list your favourite book that is set in that country.

Here we go.

Australia4449097

There must be something in the water down under because so many of my favourite books have been written by Australian author. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta is among my favourites. This book is mysterious, haunting and emotional. The characters are very complex and layered and as always the exploration of human nature is central to the book. The fact that it’s set in Australia is a bonus.

Czech Republic13600168

This trilogy actually takes us to several locations around the world but I
thought I’d highlight the first book of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy which is mainly set in Prague. I have always wanted to visit Prague and I love the way that Laini explored the quirks and culture of this city. Her descriptions were so vivid I actually felt like I was being transported there. On top of that you have a taste of magic, forbidden love and a dream of a brighter future.

France17453983

Ah Paris, the city of love. What setting would be more appropriate for Anna and the French Kiss. The focus of the book is clearly on the romance between Anna and Étienne St. Clair; however, we also get to explore a lot of the Parisian landmarks and culture.

Germany893136

Understandably, a lot of World War II based novels are set in Germany. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is quite possibly my favourite historic novel as we take the horrors of the War and place it in the most unique perspective; one that only further heightens the scope of these horrors, Death.

England23403402

There is an obvious reason I have noted England instead of the United Kingdom because A Darker Shade of Magic is solely set in London. Granted London is split into 4 parallel Londons. I love how all four London’s have a very distinct atmosphere to them and the fact that location wise there are some overlaps just makes the journey between these London’s all the more fun.

USA7664334

Seeing as a lot of Young Adult books are mainly set in the United States I figured I had to include this country. The reason I have picked Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour for this country is because this book takes us from one end of the states to the other. Plus the inclusion of pictures and tokens from the places Amy and Roger visit makes the journey that more vivid and memorable.

    • I love roadtrips and I would love to read about more of them. I feel like the Eurorail would be such a fun concept to write about because you’d basically get to explore so many different countries within Europe. I’m all for backpacking as well haha.

  1. This is such a fabulous tag! It’s always really interesting to see how all different cultures and traditions can be incorporated into YA. It seems that a lot of YA books are set in the US, but it seems with all the diversity campaigns and whatnot that seems to be changing. 🙂 Thanks for sharing, and fabulous post! ❤

    • I think we’re definitely seeing a lot more YA books set in different parts of the world and I love any chance to explore a different culture so hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more diversity location wise. All I want to do now is hop on a plane and visit all these locations haha.

    • If I had the money and the time I would literally pack a bag, hop on a plan and visit all of these locations. I’m definitely going to have to feed my wanderlust this year or I’ll go mad haha.
