Top Ten Tuesday: Characters I Didn’t Click With

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.

It’s always frustrating when you’re reading a book and no matter how hard you try you just can’t connect with a character. For me a lot of these characters just didn’t make me feel anything and more often or not they come across as forgettable.

top 10 characters didn't connect

1. Viv and Nick from What I Thought Was True by Huntely Fitzpatrick: I absolutely adore this book. However, I just couldn’t connect with Gwen’s cousin, Nick, and her best friend, Viv. About 3/4 of the way into the book an incident pushes Nick and Viv’s relationship to the forefront and I honestly could not have cared less for how that transpired.

2. Sloane from Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson: I absolutely loved Emily’s character growth in Since You’ve Been Gone. What I didn’t care for was the search for Sloan. Don’t get me wrong I wanted to know why/where she disappeared to but from the flashbacks and snapshots of their friendship I didn’t care for Sloane at all.

3. The Liars from We Were Liars by E. Lockhart: I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t even remember the names of these characters. I liked the plot and the writing of this book but the characters were nothing spectacular.

4. Lola from Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins: Don’t get me wrong I admired the way she embraced her quirkiness and eccentricities. However, I just couldn’t connect to her as much as I did with Anna and Isla.

5. Bitterblue from Bitterblue (Graceling Realm #3) by Kristin Cashore: When we first meet Bitterblue in Graceling I knew she’d be a character I wouldn’t connect with. I was hopeful that things might change in Bitterblue but all it did was make me even more frustrated with this character. I couldn’t connect to her on any level and the main reason I continued reading Bitterblue was for Katsa and Po.

6. Wren from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell: I understand Wren’s need to separate from her sister. However, I felt that in that need for independence she more or less completely cut Cath out of the picture and basically forgot about her family.

7. Lucy and Owen from The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E. Smith: I thought that this book would be a bit more romantic. These two meet during a blackout and have a great night only to then be driven miles apart. I was routing for them as a couple but as I progressed through the book my interest dwindled and by the end I just didn’t care for them as much as I did.

8. The Waking Dark by Robin Wasserman: We have a variety of different POVs in this book and I honestly didn’t care for them one bit. The premise of this book was interesting and intense but I just couldn’t find it in me to care about the characters.

9. Simon from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare: I feel like this will be a very unpopular opinion but Simon bugged me. Simple as that. He got better towards the end of the series but in the first few books I didn’t care for him at all and just felt that he was a tag-along.

10. Bella from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer: I feel like this is the obvious choice but she just had to be included in the list. I just can’t see the appeal and her constant whining was just annoying.

Those are my top 10 characters that I didn’t click with. Who couldn’t you click with?

  1. I’m not sure Wren gets a fair break in Fangirl–Cath gets to tell the story, and though she’s wrapped up in the idea of her twin, she’s not so much seeing the truth of her twin. That being said, Wren makes some very stupid decisions.

    • That’s a very fair point. I do think that by the end of the book Wren had gotten better but I just couldn’t connect with her in the beginning. I think it would be interesting to get a snippet or something from Wren’s POV just to see her perspective on the situation and maybe then I’d understand her a bit better.

  2. Yep Bella over here on my list too! Not surprisingly I’ve seen her on quite a few. I actually went all stormy and put the whole damn love triangle in mine! Lol But Bella is by far the worst offender. She is a blank slate non character.

    • I seems like Bella is a popular choice for this list haha. I’ll admit that Wren isn’t as bad as some of my other choices but her actions and the decisions she makes in Fangirl did drive me up the wall at times. Hope you enjoy Fangirl. 🙂
